In today's society, it is generally accepted that the American education system is far from optimal. Many feel that although the No Child Left Behind Act established sound principles, its underfunding has made these principles make sense. There were also widespread reports that the state is "dumbing down" standardized testing so that scores on the state can show the improvements necessary to maintain or improve their status. Many parents complain that the curriculumtoo much emphasis on teaching students how to test well at the expense of real teaching materials in ways that engage the natural curiosity of students.
Because the provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act, by necessity, the subject of many schools is to increase the scores of students who test in the "far below basic" and "below basic" in proficiency levels on their annual evaluations. Even so, most schools can not afford to give students the attention they need to improve theirtest scores.
In addition, parents of children who test in the "Master" or "advanced" range often feel as if their children are left behind, in that they are not motivated to do their best. In other words, they believe that the emphasis on addressing learners who have low test scores has the unintended consequence of lowering the test scores of those who are gifted and advanced.
Consequently, parents are turning increasingly to tutoring services to helptheir children reach their full potential. They rightly feel that tutors can help fill gaps in the education of children. For example, even a student who has mastered mathematics may need extra help, while a student gifted in math can use the services of a tutor in mathematics to increase the classroom and go to the next level. Similarly, when parents turn to a tutor, a student who needs remediation can often get the help he or she needs to succeed in the classroom.
Parents whose children areto middle school, high school junior, or high are also increasingly using mentoring services – especially online tutoring services. The highly competitive environment of university and postgraduate admissions to have a competitive advantage by necessity. One-on-one tutoring for test preparation is growing exponentially, as the services of test preparation are frequently up to 20 students in a class, making it difficult for students to get individual attention theyneed.
For students, the key to learning is engaged with the material and interaction with the instructor. Unfortunately, state funding of education today, it is increasingly difficult for students to receive the attention they need. Even if they have the best intentions, teachers too often simply do not have time to adapt materials to individual learning styles. Tutoring services are popular because they can enhance what children learn in theclassroom, can help both remedial and advanced learners who take on challenges and can help students gain a competitive advantage in test preparation.
